The Finnish taiga—an endless belt of coniferous forests, moors, and lakes. Here, along the border with Russia, brown bears roam a land that seems made for the kings of the northern wild. Nights spent in a hide, filled with waiting and wonder, reveal just how fascinating and powerful these animals are.
The Taiga - Home of the Brown Bear
The Finnish taiga is part of the largest continuous forest on Earth, the boreal belt stretching from Scandinavia to Siberia. It provides brown bears with ideal conditions: dense forests, vast wetlands, and abundant food. Today, Finland is home to around 2,300 brown bears—a stable population found mainly in the country’s east, close to the Russian border (Yle.fi, 2025).
The Brown Bear - Master of Adaptation in the North
The brown bear is the largest land predator in Europe. In Finland, males can weigh up to 300 kilograms, while females are considerably smaller (ActiveWild – “a large male Eurasian brown bear can reach 300 kg”).
Despite their size, bears are excellent runners and swimmers. They are true omnivores: their diet ranges from berries to carrion and even elk calves. In late summer, they build up massive fat reserves to survive the winter in their dens. Researchers have calculated that during this hyperphagic period, a bear may consume as many as 20,000 calories per day (Friebe et al., 2023 - Hibernation ecology of brown bears in Sweden).

Nights in the Hide - Waiting for the King of the Taiga
Anyone wishing to experience bears in the Finnish wilderness must bring patience. In special photo hides, nights are spent in silence and stillness. Hours can pass before the first shadows emerge from the forest. Then suddenly: a powerful silhouette steps cautiously into view. The crack of branches, the heavy thud of paws. Each moment grows more intense, each movement electrifies. The waiting, the silence, the tension - all of it is part of the experience and makes every encounter all the more precious.
The Fascination of Bears
Bears seem at once majestic and approachable. They show tenderness in raising their young, yet also toughness in the struggle for survival. In the Finnish taiga, these facets can be witnessed firsthand: bears plucking berries in the marshes, cubs playfully testing their strength, full-grown males commanding respect with a single look or stance. Each of these moments is a glimpse of unspoiled wilderness—raw, real, overwhelming.
