AWARE combines conservation with commitment—from protecting rhinos in the Zimbabwean bush to supporting children’s education projects. Between the daily work of rangers, veterinary care, and lived hope, it becomes clear how far-reaching true wildlife protection is.
AWARE Trust Zimbabwe & AWARE Germany e.V.
AWARE Trust Zimbabwe is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting endangered wildlife and their habitats. Its team of veterinarians works across Zimbabwe, often directly in the field, combining conservation with veterinary expertise.
AWARE Germany e.V. was founded in 2017 to support this work from Europe. The association’s mission is to promote the protection of wildlife and their habitats in Zimbabwe and across Africa. It fulfills this role through donations, material support, and by backing projects run by AWARE Trust Zimbabwe. Another central goal is to raise public awareness of the threats facing wildlife and ecosystems (aware-germany.de).

Kyle Recreational Park
At Kyle Recreational Park, it became clear how diverse—and at the same time challenging—the daily life of rangers truly is. During a shared braai (BBQ), we had the opportunity to speak with them in a relaxed atmosphere and learn about their perspective on the park. They spoke openly about both successes and challenges that shape their work—from protecting rhinos, whose survival depends on their tireless efforts, to seemingly minor but very real issues such as constant problems with tick infestations.
What stood out most was the simplicity of their living conditions. Many spend up to 30 days at a time in small corrugated-iron huts, far from the comforts we take for granted in the West. Their work is marked by sacrifice—and at the same time by unwavering dedication and passion. This contrast highlights just how deeply committed they are to their mission: protecting wildlife, preserving landscapes, and taking responsibility where it is needed most.
These conversations offered an authentic picture of how broad conservation really is: from veterinary care to constant patrols and the daily attention to even the smallest details that can shape an ecosystem. Particularly impressive was the closeness with which the rangers work alongside the animals—a connection defined by experience, trust, and respect.

School Visit in Kyle
AWARE Germany e.V. is engaged not only in wildlife and conservation projects but also in education. In Kyle, the organization supports a school where biodiversity, species protection, and climate change are part of the curriculum. Here, education is directly linked to the children’s future—and to the question of how they can thrive in a changing environment.
During our visit, the children welcomed us with songs and shared their hopes and dreams for the future. The atmosphere was full of energy, joy, and curiosity—and at the same time, it was clear what challenges they face. Many grow up in a daily reality shaped by uncertainty: unstable economic conditions, limited resources, and the constant proximity of the wilderness.
We had brought colorful pencils, stuffed animals, and footballs with us. What at first seemed like small gifts quickly became something greater: symbols of exchange, of community, of fleeting moments of carefree childhood in the midst of a demanding daily life. The children’s joy, their seriousness when speaking about their future, and the warmth with which they welcomed us made this visit unforgettable—a reminder of how closely education and hope are connected.

Chipinge - Rhino Conservation
Chipinge, in southeastern Zimbabwe, is one of the regions where black rhino protection is particularly challenging. Rangers here also work under very basic conditions, often for long stretches, far from infrastructure or comfort. Despite the hardship, their work is defined by deep commitment and a sense of responsibility that goes far beyond what might be expected.
During our visit, we gained insight into their daily tasks: patrolling the terrain, confronting the constant threat of poachers, and caring for each individual animal. Conversations made clear how much determination is required to be effective in such an environment—and how essential international support is in making this work possible at all.
The evening braai was small and intimate, a chance to share stories and connect. It showed how closely community and conservation are bound together—and how important human connection is to gather strength for the next patrol.
Chipinge thus stands as a symbol of rhino conservation at the intersection of danger, sacrifice, and dedication. The rangers here prove that conservation does not take place under ideal conditions, but exactly where the challenges are greatest—and yet it continues, carried by unwavering commitment.
